Whatcom County Republican Party Calls for Immediate Action to Enhance Nooksack River Flow Capacity Amid Ongoing Flooding Crisis
Bellingham, WA – December 15, 2025 – In response to the devastating flooding impacting communities across Whatcom County, the Whatcom County Republican Party today issued an urgent call for coordinated intervention to prevent future flood disasters during heavy rainfall events.
The Whatcom County Republican Party demands that Whatcom County government, the Washington Department of Ecology, the Washington Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Lummi Nation, and the Nooksack Tribe immediately launch a joint effort to increase the flow capacity of the Nooksack and Sumas Rivers. Proposed measures include dredging, sediment and gravel removal, log jam clearance, Nooksack delta channelization, and other proven strategies to mitigate flooding risks.
Additionally, the Party insists on the immediate allocation of existing county flood control property tax funds to support these critical river flow enhancement initiatives during periods of intense rainfall.
“Residents of Whatcom County have endured repeated flooding hardships, and proactive steps are essential to protect lives, homes, and livelihoods,” said Misty Flowers, Chair of the Whatcom County Republican Party. “These actions will provide meaningful relief and strengthen our community’s resilience against future storms.”
